Sea Dragon
Initial Release: Spring 2004, Random Booster ACT2 Prize (Yellow)
Additional Releases: Hasbro's "Sea Drake" Starter (Yellow), Random Booster ACT5 (Light Blue), Hasbro MA-18 "Sea Drake" (Yellow).
Bit Protector - "Small Type"
Should be noted that BP Size Type on initial release is not consistent for every cycle of production or re-release. Being reproduced the following year could mean a different BP Size Type for a given Beyblade.
Attack Ring (AR)
Seagon Attacker, ~21g.
Among the heaviest ARs in HMS, boasting a weight above 20g.
Incredibly high recoil AR in both spin directions, but also incredibly powerful in right-spin with a contact point not unlike Driger MS' Metal Upper.
Despite lacking the consistency of the top-tier ARs, Seagon's raw power should not be discounted. It very much fits the style of high risk, high reward that many Attack type enthusiasts would enjoy.
If it does not land a decisive knockout in the first two hits, which it is capable of doing against all viable combos in the series, it will most likely either self-knockout or have its RPM fatally reduced.
Even though it can be brutally powerful, its inconsistency in knocking out opponents and desperately relying on the first few hits to secure victory make it not quite as good as the already existing top-tier Attack ARs.
Because it is has such high recoil, using it on anything other than a rubber-based RC would be disastrous, it is not recommended at all.
It is essentially on the cusp of being viable, and if you're a fan of that reckless style of play, it will suit you better than most other ARs, as would Jiraiya Blade to a lesser extent.
Best Possible Combo
AR: Seagon Attacker (Right-Spin)
WD: CWD Defense Ring (with Metal CWD found in RBA2)
RC: Grip Flat Core (Ultimate Version)
Game Plan: Simple and decisive, even when compared to other Attack combos. Knock anything out in the first two encounters, or lose. Seagon Attacker doesn't have enough gas in the tank to produce late-game knockouts as it has too much recoil to retain an RPM that would make its contact points effective. Definitely a fun "all or nothing" style of Attacker.
Weight Disk (WD)
CWD Defense Ring, ~19g. (with 17g Metal CWD)
Sea Dragon features the highly desirable 17g metal CWD component, which you can read a bit more about in the Mold Variations Page.
Should be noted that despite being an absolute staple, the 17g metal CWD is only being factored into total CWD weight here, and in no other individual Beyblade page, so don't think that the plastic component is just that much heavier than everything else, as they all have 15g stock metal CWDs.
A very conservative, circular, and weighty plastic CWD part. Defense Ring clocks in at around 2g, which is quite respectable among plastic CWD components. For a detailed breakdown of each plastic CWDs individual weights, see the HMS Weight Comparison page.
This shape, decent weight and most importantly fixed nature, makes it one of the most competitively viable WDs. Nothing is more versatile, safe, and rewarding to use.
Highly competitive part for Attack, Defense, and possibly Stamina depending on if you want to use a niche, heavier build or are running a Spring Core combo, where it is the wisest option available.
Best Possible Combo:
AR: Samurai Upper (Right-Spin)
WD: CWD Defense Ring (with Metal CWD found in RBA2)
RC: Grip Flat Core (Ultimate Version)
or
AR: Circle Upper (Mold 2, Right-Spin)
WD: CWD Defense Ring (with Metal CWD found in RBA2)
RC: Bearing Core 2
or
AR: Metal Ape (Either Spin)
WD: CWD Defense Ring
RC: Bearing Core
Game Plan: Each of these are absolute top-shelf HMS combos for their respective types, and their win conditions are consistent with that typing. The Samurai Upper combo wants to knockout its opponents, the Circle Upper combo wants to stay in the stadium and repel attacks, and the Metal Ape combo wants to last as long as possible in the stadium. CWD Defense Ring is versatile enough to not only make itself at home in every typing, but actually find itself to be perfectly viable and safe in a competitive setting.
CWD Free Defense Ring, ~20g (17g Metal CWD)
Found in RBA2 releases of Einstein MS with regular Defense Ring yellow colour. Found in some RBA5 releases of Sea Dragon MS in light blue. This text is copied from the Einstein MS page, as it is the same part.
The Free Defense Ring alternative CWD is roughly a gram heavier than the original Defense Ring's plastic component, while also being considerably chunkier and recoil-laden.
Compared to the original Defense Ring, Free Defense Ring is free-spinning, much thicker and larger in diameter, and can actually be a point of contact in battle.
For quite a while this CWD was viewed as not particularly useful or stand-out, and for good reason, it was too recoil-prone to be good for anything other than Attack types, and the top tier Attack types don't particularly need the extra recoil from below to do well.
Where CWD Free Defense Ring shines is not among The Big Three of HMS Attack combos, but with ARs like Metal Upper and Jiraiya Blade, who need a little bit of extra push in their game to reach a similar level of consistency as the other pillars of Attack.
Brings these two aforementioned ARs, especially Metal Upper, up from mediocrity and propel them onto the competitive list. It also serves as kryptonite to wall-style Defense combos that rely on CWD God Ring or Reverse Defenser to cushion blows.
By providing that bit of extra recoil from below, more significant hits can be landed on those chunky Defense combos, something many of the mediocre Attack ARs need desperately to even be borderline viable.
Best Possible Combo:
AR: Metal Upper (Right-Spin preferred)
WD: CWD Free Defense Ring (with Metal CWD found in RBA2)
RC: Grip Flat Core (Ultimate Version)
Game Plan: Knock things out, it is that simple. Metal Upper was missing just a bit of secret sauce to make it stand out, because on its own it was a bit lacking compared to The Big Three. CWD Free Defense Ring is that secret sauce, giving it just the nudge it needs to be a powerhouse against an overwhelming majority of what can be thrown at it from the HMS series.
CWD Defense Ring (RBA2)
CWD Free Defense Ring (RBA5)
Running Core (RC)
Metal Ball Core, ~3g.
Probably the biggest loser of Bearing Core's existence.
Unique and interesting RC with a free-spinning, greased metal ball at the tip. Akin to Burst's Orbit Metal.
Fairly good endurance, remains decently stable for what it is, and can also be aggressive when launched correctly. Makes for a very good tip in a vacuum.
Had the potential to be a highly versatile Stamina/Compact RC had it not been rendered completely obsolete by Bearing Core that was actually released before it to begin with.
Best Possible Combo:
AR: Metal Ape (Either Spin)
CWD: CWD Reverse Defenser (with Metal CWD found in RBA2)
RC: Metal Ball Core
Game Plan: Rather than provide a generic and safe Circle/Samurai Upper combo, why not go for something a bit more interesting, like an HMS Compact? You're not picking MBC to play it safe anyway. One could replace Reverse Defenser with something like Circle Heavy, also. This is a fun combo that with the decent recoil of Metal Ape, can highlight how interesting MBC behaves, and perhaps with a bit of luck, even knockout opposing Stamina combos.
